Disaster Planning: Hurricane Katrina: Lessons Learned

To

Chief Executive Officers of All National Banks, Federal Branches and Agencies, Technology Service Providers, Department and Division Heads, and All Examining Personnel

The guidance attached to this bulletin continues to apply to federal savings associations.

This bulletin transmits the attached "Lessons Learned From Hurricane Katrina: Preparing Your Institution for a Catastrophic Event," booklet developed by the Federal Financial Institutions Examinations Council member agencies(1) and the Conference of State Bank Supervisors. The booklet relays experiences and lessons learned that the agencies received from financial institutions that were affected by Hurricane Katrina, which you may find helpful when conducting a review of your bank's disaster recovery and business continuity plans. The booklet also contains contact information for each of the federal and state banking agencies.

The lessons learned described in this booklet should not be construed as new regulatory requirements, nor do they supplant or modify other guidance provided by the agencies, including that contained in the FFIEC IT Examination Handbook, Business Continuity Planning Booklet (http://www.FFIEC.gov/guides.htm).

For additional information on disaster recovery and business continuity planning, please contact your supervisory office or the Bank Information Technology Division at (202) 649-6340.
